"I don't usually read historical fiction but yours is like you're actually, physically there."
December 2015 Letter from 6th grader
When I was a girl, I loved to read. By the time I was in fourth grade, I knew I wanted to be a writer. I grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, the oldest of three girls. In the 1800s, the city was at the center of the Industrial Revolution. Maybe that’s how I got my interest in history.
I've lived in Honolulu, Walla Walla, Washington, and Corvallis, Oregon. Today we live in West Linn, Oregon, just outside of Portland. My husband Andy is a winemaker and artist (and did the map for one of my new books, A Bandit's Tale.) We have two grown children, Rebekah and Dimitri and a grandson named Oliver! We have an old cat Sophie, two dogs, and birds, including a canary named Tyrion.
For many years, I worked in educational fundraising by day and wrote books by night! These days, my dogs Brooklyn and Rue are my office mates. And when we're done with a deadline, we love to go on hikes or work in the garden (or visit other gardens!).
